Defending Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs has penned a lengthy message addressing his second-place finish at the East Coast Relays and finally making his season debut after almost eight months of being out.

Olympic 100m champion Marcell Jacobs was finally able to open his 2024 season and is clearly elated to see what the season has in store for him.

The Italian opened his season with a second-place finish at the East Coast Relays held at the University of North Florida Jax Track at Hodges Stadium on Saturday, April 27.

He clocked an impressive time of 10.11 to cross the finish line behind Olympic 200m champion Andre De Grasse of Canada as American Trayvon Bromell, a two-time 100m world championship bronze medallist finished third, in 10.14.

Following his second-place finish in the season opener, Jacobs shared a lengthy post, expressing gratitude to have finally opened his season and admitted that he was a bit tense and was worried about the race would turn out but to his surprise, everything went well.

He also extended a hand of gratitude to his fans for always walking with him and cheering him on during his great and bad days too.

“Finally, the season has begun! It feels great to be back competing. I admit I was a bit tense and had many unknowns, but it was a great race.

“The most important part was breaking the ice and seeing how the training was going. I never tapered for this race; it was part of the training week, and that counts even more!

“As always, thank you for your warm support. It's just the beginning of a great season. Now, focus and heart on the relay world championships. Love you all,” he said.

Jacobs' last race took place at the Zagreb meeting in Croatia on September 10, 2023. As the defending Olympic champion, he believes the season opener places him in a better position to know where his body is at as far as training is concerned.

Jacobs is now based in Jacksonville, Florida, where he is trained by American Rana Reider along with training partners De Grasse, Bromell and Japanese sprinter Abdul Hakim Sani Brown.
