Marco Arop is confident that David Rudisha's world record will go down soon, owing to the current crop of 800m runners.
Canada’s 800m running maestro Marco Arop is confident that David Rudisha’s world record can be broken anytime soon, thanks to the current crop of 800m runners.
The reigning world champion noted that he might not be the one to break it but one of his competitors will certainly do it. The world record stands at 1:40.91 and was set by Rudisha at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Djamel Sedjati of Algeria owns the fastest time in the world this year after clocking a stunning 1:41.56 to win the race at the Diamond League Meeting in Paris. The time he clocked is also the third fastest time in the world, after Rudisha’s time and Wilson Kipketer’s time.

“I’m hoping that I could break 1:42 at some point because the training has been going really well and based on the results, I’m definitely in that sort of shape to be able to run that,” Arop said during a pre-race press conference ahead of the Diamond League Meeting in Monaco.
“I also believe that now, seeing that race, some guys have had massive PR’s and it goes to show that you put your mind to it and you really get after it and you don’t really know what you are capable of and I think that world record is definitely within the horizon…I don’t know who is going to break it because every runner is strong.”
Meanwhile, Arop has been unbeaten in the 800m this season and as he gears up for the Diamond League Meeting in Monaco, he hopes to extend the winning streak.
The 25-year-old opened his season with a dominant win in Xiamen before claiming top honours in the Edmonton Athletics Invitational. Arop was also impressive at the Canadian Championships, winning in 1:43.71.
