Marco Arop secured a comfortable win, clocking a meeting record time to cross the finish line in the men's 800m at the Diamond League Meeting in Silesia.

Marco Arop has finally ended Emmanuel Wanyonyi’s winning streak with a commanding win at the Diamond League Meeting in Silesia.

Arop cruised to an easy victory in a meeting record time of 1:41.86 to cross the finish line ahead of wunderkind Wanyonyi who clocked 1:43.23. American Bryce Hoppel completed the podium in a time of 1:43.32.

Arop pulled away from Wanyonyi and his other rivals early in the race and claimed the decisive win to finally claim victory over Wanyonyi for the first time this season.

The Canadian star was seeking revenge against Wanyonyi who shocked him at the Paris Olympic Games and the Diamond League Meeting in Lausanne.

Arop finished second at the Paris Olympic Games as Wanyonyi claimed the win in the race. At the Diamond League Meeting in Lausanne, the script was no different as Wanyonyi continued the hot streak.

On his part, Wanyonyi has been in great shape this season, threatening David Rudisha’s 800m world record. He started the 2024 season with a world record in the mile road.

The newly-crowned Olympic champion claimed top honours at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat before dominating at the Kenyan Olympic trials. The 20-year-old finished second at the Diamond League Meeting in Paris behind Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati.

At the Olympic Games in Paris, France, Wanyonyi was in a class of his own as he claimed the win in the heats before winning the semifinal. He threw down the gauntlet in the men’s 800m final to become the youngest Kenyan to win the 800m Olympic gold medal.

Wanyonyi ensured Kenya retained the men’s title from the 2008 Olympic Games when Wilfred Bungei won the title.

Hoppel finished fourth behind Djamel Sejati in the men's 800m final at the Paris Olympic Games and the podium place also eluded him at the Diamond League Meeting in Lausanne. He has finally tasted a podium place competing against one of the most quality 800m fields of all time.

Other Kenyans in the race, Wycliffe Kinyamal and Aaron Kemei finished fifth and 10th in respective times of 1:43.54 and 1:45.56.
