Mary Moraa reacts to achieving seasonal best 400m time at USTAF LA Grand Prix

Mary Moraa was handed her first 400m defeat of the season at the USTAF Los Angeles Grand Prix on Saturday night.

Reigning world 800m champion Mary Moraa tasted her first 400m loss of the season at the USTAF LA Grand Prix on Saturday night, May 19.

Moraa finished second behind Marileidy Paulino, clocking a season-best time of 50.27 to cross the finish line. USA’s Alexis Holmes completed the podium, clocking an impressive 50.73.

After the race, Moraa shared on her Facebook page, saying: “Dropped down in distance to close well for second in season's best 50.56sec behind World 400m champion Marileidy Paulino in 50.27 at the USAF Los Angeles Grand Prix.”

The Commonwealth Games champion is just fresh from winning the 800m at the Diamond League Meeting in Doha and has been unbeaten in the 800m so far.

Moraa opened her season with a win in the 400m at the third Athletics Kenya track and field meeting before proceeding to reign supreme at the African Games national trials.

The 23-year-old was also in a class of her own as she took the top prize at the African Games, clocking an impressive 50.57 to cross the finish line.

In the 800m, Moraa started off with a win at the Kip Keino Classic, successfully defending her title and proceeded to win the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Qatar.

She now heads to the Prefontaine Classic, the Diamond League Meeting in Eugene next weekend, where she will lock horns with her track rivals Keely Hodgkinson and Athing Mu.

Hodgkinson started her season with a 400m personal best time in a race in Italy while Mu, the reigning Olympic champion, is yet to open her season.
