Reigning world 800m champion Mary Moraa has reacted to her second-place finish in the women’s 800m at Alexis Ohanian’s Athlos NYC event on Thursday, September 26.
The Commonwealth Games champion went into the race with high hopes of claiming another win after reigning supreme at the Diamond League Meeting final in Brussels but the field proved too strong and she was forced to settle for second, still an impressive performance from her after a long season.
World indoor champion Tsige Duguma claimed the win in great fashion, clocking a stunning 1:57.43 to cross the finish line as Moraa came in second in a time of 1:58.05. Despite the second-place finish, the Olympic 800m bronze medallist expressed satisfaction towards ending her season a high, lauding rival Duguma for taking the win.

American icon on why women's-only Athlos meet in New York will redefine track and field
Justin Gatlin has explained why he thinks the recent women's-only Athlos track meet in New York will define a new era for the sport.
“A beautiful end to an awesome season. I get to finish second in 1:58.05 at the Athlos NYC Meeting. Congratulations to the winner, World Indoor champion Tsige Duguma (1:57.43) of Ethiopia,” Mary Moraa said.
Duguma has been a threat to Moraa’s existence this season as she also beat the Kenyan 800m sensation at the Paris Olympic Games. Competing in the French capital, Moraa finished third with Keely Hodgkinson and Duguma finishing first and second respectively.
However, Mary Moraa has also enjoyed great times this season, shattering Caster Semenya’s 600m world best at the ISTAF 2024 in Berlin. She also claimed the 400m title at the African Games before anchoring the Kenyan 4x400m mixed relay team to a bronze medal at the event.
She also claimed top honours at the Kip Keino Classic and the Diamond League Meeting in Doha and claimed second place at the Prefontaine Classic after the reigning Olympic champion Hodgkinson.
