From the qualification standard released by the World Athletics, here are five Nigerian athletes that have qualified for the World Indoor Championships.

The World Athletics governing council has released the qualification system and standard for the 2024 World Indoor Championships in Glasgow.

This qualification system includes the qualifying standards of each event, and means of participation at the three-day championships, taking place from Friday, March 1st to Sunday, March 3rd, 2024 at the Emirates Arena.

World Athletics release entry standards for World Indoor Championships

World Athletics has stated that athletes competing in individual events can qualify in several ways:

  • by achieving the entry standard
  • by World Indoor Tour wild card for overall event winners in the 2023 and 2024 World Indoor Tours
  • by virtue of their position in the world rankings (to complete, where necessary, the target number of athletes in each event).

Here are five Nigerian athletes that have qualified so far by entry standards.

Tobi Amusan (60m Hurdles)

The world 100mH champion surpassed the outdoor qualifying mark of 12.80s when she ran 12.59s to finish second behind former world champion Nia Ali at the Tom Jones Invitational.

Though she didn't compete in the indoor season, where she could have hit the 60m Hurdles qualifying mark of 8.02s, her outdoor time ensures her qualification.

Rosemary Chukwuma (women's 60m)

The Texas Tech University standout athlete was the first Nigerian to punch her ticket after blazing to a time of 7.09s earlier in the season, which surpassed the standard of 7.19s.

Favour Ofili (women's 60m)

Louisiana State University speedster Ofili ran a Personal Best (PB) of 7.14s in the 60m to qualify for the championships.

Favour Ashe

Nigeria's fastest man Ashe's PB of 6.51s clocked in his semifinal race at the NCAA Indoor Championships, smashed the qualifying standard of 6.58s.

Ezekiel Nathaniel

A college student at Baylor University, the sophomore student obliterated his lifetime best twice at the NCAA Indoor Championships, with his current PB of 45.69s, enough to exceed the standard of 45.90s.

Other athletes close to qualification

Ruth Usoro came short of the long jump qualifying mark of 6.89m with her brilliant PB of 6.87m in her debut appearance of the season. However, with the qualification window period still open, she has enough time to achieve it.

Udodi Onwuzurike and Ese Brume are also sure candidates capable of qualifying. Onwuzurike missed the standard by 0.01s with his PB of 6.59s, while Brume, the world indoor silver medallist, will make her outdoor season count for her qualification.
