She displayed a dominant show to win the race in 2:48:35 ahead of her closest challenger Zeddy Jerop who finished second in 2:52:54.

Newly crowned Lewa Marathon champion Mercy Kwambai has revealed that finishing second during last year’s edition of the event fueled her to return in the hunt for victory.

Kwambai, a mother of two, revealed that she finished second in last year’s edition of the half marathon and she chose to go back and try the full marathon.

She displayed a dominant show to win the race in 2:48:35 ahead of her closest challenger Zeddy Jerop who finished second in 2:52:54. Fridah Lodepa sealed the podium after clocking 3:04:32.

“I was here during last year’s edition of this event and I finished second in the half marathon…this time around I came back and wanted to try the full marathon. I am happy with this win,” she said.

Kwambai recounted the race was not a walk in the park owing to the tough course. However, she admitted that there was no competition for her.

“The race wasn’t easy since the course had many hills but I have worked hard and finally it has paid off well. At the 10km mark, I felt like I wasn’t going to complete the race but I’m glad I have finished. I didn’t notice any competition and I was running my own race,” she said, adding that the slower time she posted was because of the hard course.

The Kenya Police officer revealed that her next destination will be a marathon in October where she will be competing in Germany. However, she did not mention the exact race she will be participating in.

The Lewa marathon was her first 42km distance ran on home soil and she dedicated the win to her daughter.
