The 2024 New York City Marathon promises intense competition and significant prize money across multiple divisions, with defending champions Hellen Obiri and Tamirat Tola headlining a strong field and bonuses for course record-breakers.

The 2024 edition of the New York City Marathon is coming up this weekend with top runners scheduled to walk away with hefty prize money as announced by race organisers.

Defending champions Hellen Obiri and Tamirat Tola headline the stacked fields and this year’s edition of the race will also promise to be a tough show following the initial field that had been announced.

In the open division, the winners of the race will walk away with $100,000 as the second and third-place finishers will pocket $60,000 and $40,000. The athletes who finish fourth, fifth and sixth will bag $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000 respectively.

The runners cross the finish line seventh, eighth and ninth will be awarded $7,500, $5,000 and $2,500 with the 10th-place finishers bagging $2,000.

Race organisers announced that in the American division, to be eligible for prize money, athletes must have USA citizenship, and must not be eligible to represent another federation in international competition.

The first American to cross the finish line will pocket $25,000 while the second and third-place finishers will bag $15,000 and $10,000. Those who finish fourth and fifth will bag $5,000 and $3,000. In the Masters Division, only athletes above 40 years will also be awarded.

Organisers announced that a $50,000 bonus will be paid to the Open Division and/or Wheelchair Division race winners who break the existing course records. This bonus is limited to the race winners, only, and the athlete must break, not tie, the record.

The current course records in the open division are held by Tamirat Tola in the men’s race (2:04:58) and Margaret Okayo in the women’s race (2:22:31).
