The highly anticipated second edition of Nairobi City Marathon scheduled for Sunday, July 2 has received a huge boost after KCB bank and Athletics Kenya signed a Sh5 million sponsorship today.
The cheque was handed over to the race director Ibrahim Hussein and Athletics Kenya president Jack Tuwei during the official launch of the marathon on Wednesday, June 21 morning.
Speaking during the event, Tuwei noted that the sponsorship was a big boost to the event in terms of prize money and the operation of the event.

The event was initially scheduled for Sunday, May 21.
“The money is a big boost since we pride ourselves in awarding athletes the highest prize money in the local events. Some amount will be channeled to the final touches of organising the event and also contribute to the prize money,” he said.
The winners of the 42km distance will be awarded a whooping Ksh 3.5 million. The top 20 athletes to cross the finish line in the full marathon will be awarded cash prizes with the 20th athlete to cross the finish line being awarded KSh30,000.
The runners-up and first runners-up will be awarded KSh2.25 million and 1.5 million respectively. In the half marathon, the top three athletes will walk away with KSh150,000, 80,000, and 50,000 respectively.
The podium finishers in the 10km race will walk away with KSh100,000, 60,000, and 40,000 respectively.
Tuwei urged the masses to register for the race and stand a chance to win money and even boost their health.
The marathon registration costs KSh1,500 while the half marathon costs KSh1,200. Registration for the 10km race costs KSh1,000 while the 6km race costs KSh500.

The event is scheduled for May 21 in the streets of Nairobi.
He revealed that this year’s event has attracted many international athletes as compared to last year. He added that during last year’s event, more than 1,000 international athletes participated in the race and recorded good times.
Tuwei added that last year’s event saw the rise of many upcoming athletes who went on to compete in other international races and win.
“We hope this year’s event will also see athletes record good times and raise our country’s flag high when they compete internationally. We brag about having both world records in the marathon distance and we want to maintain that culture by producing great marathoners,” he said.
