The qualifying time for the 200m and 100m in the World Championships is 20.16 and 10.00 respectively for the men’s category.

Rookie Stephen Oluoch is already salivating to don Team Kenya’s jersey for the World Championships in Budapest scheduled for August 19 to 27 in Budapest, Hungary.

This comes after his explosive performance at the third Athletics Kenya (AK) weekend meet staged at the Thika Stadium from Friday 10 to Saturday 11 March.

Oluoch, who trains in Ngong, destroyed a fine field of athletes to win the 200m race in 21.10 ahead of Moses Wasike and Samuel Chege who clocked 21.30 and 21.40 to place second and third respectively.

Speaking to Pulse Sports, Oluoch noted that his main aim going forward is to qualify for the global event, adding that if he qualifies, it will be his first time making the cut in the national team.

“Actually, my priority right now is qualifying for the World Championships. I want to run sub 20.00 and I believe that is possible. I specialize in the 100m and 200m,” he said.

The qualifying time for the 200m and 100m in the World Championships is 20.16 and 10.00 respectively for the men’s category.

Sprints in the country were little-known and Oluoch attested that the rise of Africa 100m champion Ferdinand Omanyala inspired him to give sprints a try. He revealed that he started competitive running in 2020.

“Omanyala has inspired many sprinters in Kenya and I am among them. He has proven that anything is possible,” he said.

Oluoch participated in the second AK meet where he competed in the 100m and 200m. He, however, did not make the cut to the final of both races.
