PREVIEW: 3 events to highlight day two of the Kenyan Olympic trials

Athletics Kenya are hosting the Olympic trials with the second day promising to be even more thrilling with astonishing match ups.

The first day of the Kenyan Olympic trials saw tons of athletes show up to try and qualify for the games and also impress fans.

Double world record holder Faith Kipyegon was opening her season, and she surely oozed class as she won the 5000m in style ahead of 10,000m world record holder Beatrice Chebet. The women’s steeplechase saw Faith Cherotich take the crown with youngster Reynold Cheruiyot also impressing at the event.

Mary Moraa also showcased family love, letting her cousin, Sarah Moraa, finish second in the women’s 800m final to qualify for the event. However, she has yet to hit the qualifying mark for the event.

Just like day one, day two will also promise to be a thriller, with interesting races still in the pipeline. Kipyegon will be in action in the 1500m with the men’s 800m also having attracted a very strong field.

1) Men’s 5000m

The men’s 5000m will be one to watch, having assembled very strong athletes to try and take up the top two slots up for grabs. Jacob Krop, Ishmael Kipkurui and Stanley Waithaka headline the strong field of the 20 invited athletes.

Krop has been known to show up when it matters and when he steps foot on the track at the Nyayo National Stadium, he will mean business.

However, Kipkurui and Waithaka will be out to stop him, and bid for the coveted top prize at the event. Another athlete to watch will be Cornelius Kemboi, who claimed bronze at the African Games in Accra, Ghana.

2) Women’s 1500m

All eyes will be on Kipyegon, a two-time Olympic 1500m champion, to carry the day in her favourite event. The 30-year-old showcased her class in the 5000m and she will certainly be out to prove a point in the 1500m.

Kipyegon will be up against Caroline Nyaga and Winny Chebet, who have struggled to maintain their momentum in the past few months and they will be seeking a bounce back.

Nelly Chepchirchir will also be out to make a statement, after making her senior debut at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary last year. Purity Chepkirui and Mary Ekiru have also been invited for the trials.

3) Men’s 800m final

The race will promise to be the highlight of day two, since it will double up as the actual mini Olympics, having attracted the likes of Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Wycliffe Kinyamal and Kipngetich Ngeno.

Wanyonyi, the world 800m silver medallist, was unsure about competing in the final after stumbling and finishing sixth but it has since been confirmed that he will be in the mix. The youngster will be competing against the Commonwealth Games champion Kinyamal, who is in great shape.

Ngeno also hopes to make the cut to the Olympic Games, and he has always given his best during competitions, with the trials being no exception. Aaron Cheminingwa and Kelvin Loti will also be competing.
