The athlete fended off strong competition from Agnes Mumbua to claim top honours.
Fresh from winning the 10,000m race in the second Athletics Kenya meet at the Nyayo National Stadium, Rebecca Mwangi is not resting on her laurels as she eyes a debut in the national team.
Mwangi, who was making her debut in the race category obliterated a strong field of athletes to cut the tape in 32:37.40 ahead of her closest challenger Agnes Mumbua who placed second in 32:39.00. Edna Kibiwott finished third in 32:47.60.
The highly contested race saw Mwangi claim a narrow win considering Mumbua was also fighting for the title with a few meters to go. Mwangi, however, was salvaged by her agility as she sailed to claim top honours.
The Japan-based athlete revealed that she dreams of wearing the Team Kenya jersey and flying the country's flag high one day.
"This year...I just dream of making my debut in the national team," she said, adding that she trains in Nyahururu whenever she’s is in the country.
Previously, Mwangi had only competed in the 5000m in the AK meetings which saw her claim podium finishes in two of the meets both staged at the Nyayo National Stadium.
Comparing the two races, Mwangi attested that the 25-lap race is more challenging. She, however, noted that her coach has played a great role in her win and she extended a hand of gratitude to him.
"My coach pushed me to display this great performance. I appreciate him so much," she said.
