Youngster Reynold Kipkorir has opened up about making a switch from 5000m to 1500m and explained why he decided to run the 2km rather than the 10km at the World Cross Country Championships.

Reigning World Under-20 1500m champion Reynold Kipkorir has opened up on making a switch from the 5000m to 1500m and why he chose to compete in the 2km mixed relay at this year’s World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

During last year’s edition of the cross country, Kipkorir finished second in the men’s under-20 category behind Ishmael Kipkurui who will be competing in the senior men’s race alongside Sabastian Sawe and Nicholas Kipkorir among others.

Kipkorir will also be competing in the senior category but now he has come to a shorter distance, unlike last year when he raced in the 8km race. The youngster is confident that something good will come out of the mixed relay team since he is well-prepared and ready for the big event.

“I have prepared well for the mixed relay…last year I competed in the 8km and now I have graduated to the senior level.

“I decided to run the 2km because last year I was running the 5000m and then switched to the 1500m and I was not able to compete in the 10km at the cross country because my mileage had started reducing,” Kipkorir said.

Kipkorir explained that they have to defend the title that was won by the team of Mirriam Cherop, Kyumbe Munguti, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, and the now-banned Brenda Chebet.

“We expect to defend our title…we just need to go and check out the course and decide on who will start and who will finish the race and then everything will be set.

“Our preparation has been okay and I have worked together with other athletes and everything has been okay. Cross country usually helps me a lot when I start my season because I’m able to maintain my speed and stamina and I get most of my skills from the cross country,” he said.
