Cleophas Kandie has revealed that he loves training in Japan because of the availability of specialized training equipment which makes his training sessions seamless.

Speaking to Pulse Sports, Kandie added that if Athletics Kenya (AK) step up in matters concerning training facilities, athletes will not be forced to travel out of the country.

“Training in Kenya is okay but the problem is the lack of upgraded facilities. In Japan, I have everything at my disposal…it makes training easier,” Kandie said.

The 22-year-old on Saturday, March 11, annihilated a solid field of athletes to win the men’s 10,000m first heat. He proved his agility when he led from gun to tape at the event.

Overally, Kandie settled for fourth place in 29:13.30 behind Stanley Njihia, Stephen Lamaiyan and Hillary Koech who placed first (28:47.80), second (28:51.20) and third (28:53.70) respectively.

The Torongo-based athlete revealed that his main focus going forward is to qualify for the World Championships in Budapest. He was in action during the 2017 World Under-18 championships where he bagged a silver medal in the steeplechase.

The last time Kandie represented the country was at the 2019 World Cross-country Championships where he placed 18th in the junior men's race.

In order to realise his dream, he revealed that he will be travelling back to Japan in April as he seeks to work on his speed. The qualifying time for the 10,000m in the global event is 27:10.00 for the men.

“I want to bring a medal home if I manage to go for the event,” he said.
