Majority leader of the Senate Aaron Cheruiyot has urged Athletics Kenya to conduct elections as soon as possible as he gave the federation a deadline.

Senate majority leader Aaron Cheruiyot has pleaded with Athletics Kenya to conduct federation elections before the year ends.

Speaking during Kelvin Kiptum’s burial proceedings on Friday, Cheruiyot urged Athletics Kenya officials to have a sit-down and ensure that the court case is withdrawn so they can give a chance to athletes to elect who they want.

“We have challenges in many of our sports federations including Athletics Kenya which for many years, has not done their elections because of disputes and wrangles that are there.

“I want to plead and request the leadership of Athletics Kenya and all those people who are in court, in honour of Kelvin Kiptum and all the athletes that suffer because of challenges in our federations, let us make sure that the year doesn’t end before we conduct elections for athletics Kenya.

“I want to urge you to have a sit-down and withdraw the case from the court and allow the athletes to elect who they want so that work will continue,” Cheruiyot said.

The last time Athletics Kenya held their general elections was in 2015 when the now president, Jack Tuwei was elected.

Elections were to be held in 2017 but 10 applicants took legal action against Athletics Kenya seeking to have the court halt the national athletics governing body from carrying out its elections.

Cheruiyot also noted that Athletics Kenya had tabled the matter of affordable housing to the Senate and they will ensure they consult with the athletes before passing the bill.

He explained that this will be in a bid to ensure that athletes choose what they want and what they are comfortable with.

“On behalf of the senate, we want to ensure that we listen to the Athletics Kenya federation and also make sure we call the athletes themselves to say what they want considering the affordable housing scheme,” he said.
