Sha'Carri Richardson's training mate Alana Reid has revealed why she feels obligated to continue Shelly-Anne Fraser-Pryce's legacy after the Jamaican's retirement.

Sha’Carri Richardson’s training mate Alana Reid has for the first time opened up about how Shelly-Anne Fraser-Pryce is her source of inspiration and why she feels indebted to her.

Fraser-Pryce announced that she would be hanging her spikes after the Olympic Games in Paris, France this year and Reid noted that she will look to continue making the track star proud.

The 19-year-old explained that Fraser-Pryce has a gorgeous heart on and off the track and she has given her all when it comes to being an inspiration to the young generation and the youngster hopes to follow in her footsteps.

“To be honest, I think she has done enough in the sport. She is someone that I really look up to even through championships…there are times when I was at the start line I doubted myself but I had to be strong.

“I know that people out there believe in me and I have to believe in myself and she is somebody that even though nobody believes in her, she always believes in herself so I always look up to her.

“Seeing that she feels like her time has come to an end and she needs to close out her chapter I have to give her everything and I know that on and off the track she’s a great person so it’s just for me to try to follow her role,” Reid said during an interview with Fitz Dunk.

Meanwhile, Fraser-Pryce announced her retirement earlier this year, noting that her son and husband need her after years of devoting her time to the track.

“My son needs me. My husband and I have been together since before I won in 2008. He has sacrificed for me. We’re a partnership, a team.

“It’s because of that support that I’m able to do the things that I’ve been doing for all these years. And I think I now owe it to them to do something else,” Fraser-Pryce said.

At the Olympic Games, Reid hopes to join multiple world champion Fraser-Pryce, multiple Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah, and two-time world 200m champion Shericka Jackson.

She believes that competing with them will teach her a lot as she looks to also carve her own lane in her already glamorous career.

“It’s just for me to stay focused and I know that they are bigger than me and they have the experience so it’s just for me not to follow them but have my own path to tread on.

“I think that I do very well so it’s just something to take my time and know everything will fall into place when it should,” she said.
