In her debut, Lokedi displayed phenomenal performance to win the marathon in 2:23:23.

Sharon Lokedi has termed her 2022 New York City Marathon imperious win as a life-changing moment in her career.

Lining up against a strong field in the marathon, little-known Lokedi ran a tactical race to cut the tape in 2:23:23 ahead of Kenyan-Israeli Lonah Salpeter who placed second in 2:23:30.

Lokedi added that the win was also a source of inspiration for her as she fired warning shots at her opponents in the upcoming races.

“Winning my first marathon was a life-changing moment for me to be honest. It opened my career…it was an amazing time for me and that win is still vivid in my mind. It brought a lot of excitement to my life.

I’m looking forward to a lot more of this. I’m not done yet…I’m still coming back,” she said, as quoted by Nation Sport.

The US-based athlete kickstarted her career in 2015 and was predominantly competing in track races. She then switched to road races in 2019 and was competing in the 10km and 5km.

In 2021, Lokedi switched to the Half Marathon and she made her debut at the Great North Run where she settled for fourth place.

Last year, Lokedi participated in the New York City Half Marathon and settled for fourth place before turning the tables at her marathon debut in New York.

She revealed that her plan was not to win the race despite having done rigorous training in preparation for the same.

“I had really done great preparation for the marathon but I was just going there to have fun. I did not want to put a lot of pressure on myself but it turned out to be a good day,” she said.

Speaking about the Boston Marathon slated for Monday, April 17, Lokedi expressed her disappointment as she was forced to withdraw due to an injury.

“I was very excited to go and compete in Boston but my injury cannot allow me to do some certain aspects of training. I wanted to go there very well prepared. However, I hope I’ll be there next year,” she said.
