The Jamaican claimed victory in the 100m at the season-ending Diamond League race while the world champion could only finish fourth.
Shericka Jackson claimed the bragging rights in the women’s 100m at the season-ending Diamond League meeting, the Prefontaine Classic, following a hard-fought victory on Saturday.
Jamaican Jackson clocked 10.70 to emerge victorious, five milliseconds ahead of Marie-Josee Ta Lou of the Ivory Coast while compatriot Elaine Thomson-Hera completed the podium in 10.79.
World champion Sha’Carri Richardson paid the price for a poor start, finishing a disappointing fourth in 10.80.
Jackson, who was beaten by Richardson at the 2023 World Championship, was in a class of her own as the rest of field scrambled for the other podium positions in what was a slow race, perhaps due to the effects of a grueling campaign.
It was still five milliseconds slower than her season’s best of 10.65 but she had earned her revenge against the American who claimed gold while she settled for silver over the distance at the Worlds.
For Richardson, a slow start meant she could not sustain the momentum of the race, getting a rare loss in 100m this season.
Richardson has been the most consistent 100m runner this year given of the eight fastest 100m times of 2023, she owns five, with the earliest of those coming back in May when she ran 10.76 with the outdoor season still in its infancy.
Her performance on Saturday was a far cry from the 10.65 she posted when winning gold at the World Championship in Budapest, Hungary which will leave her disappointed even if it was the final race of the season.
