In the recent past, athletes have called out the government for their salary delays but things are about to change for the good.

From time to time, athletes have thrown tantrums on how they are never paid in good time and that narrative is about to change.

One case, in particular, is when the 2015 World champion Julius Yego took to his Facebook page to lament how they are paid very little amounts of prize money and the payments are also made late.

Yego said: “It’s such a shame to a country known around and celebrated in athletics to pay such to its athletes. It has also to be noted that in some championships in the calendar of athletics, some athletes have never been paid their medal rewards.

The team that represented Kenya at the African Senior Athletics Championships in Mauritius has never been paid a year later. Salaries and Remuneration Commission please take time and review the allowance scheme for sportsmen and women in Kenya and put up a policy that these patriots deserve.

Speaking during the flagging off of Team Kenya to the World Championships, Sports PS Engineer Peter Tum noted that all the athletes who fly the country’s flag high will be awarded in good time.

He also extended a hand of gratitude to the Sports CS Ababu Namwamba and the officials who have been guiding Team Kenya ahead of the global showpiece.

Under this regime, I think for the first time we have been able to ensure that any athlete who leaves this country is paid in time,” he said.

He added that courtesy of the Sports CS, any athlete who breaks a world record or does exemplary well is awarded.

Tum noted that the team heading to Budapest is well-motivated because of the significant changes that have happened in the sports scene so far.

Anybody who wins a medal or competes favourably will be recognised and even as this team goes to Budapest, they are aware of the great reward that awaits them back at home. I will continue ensuring that the athletes’ requirements and needs are given priority,” he said.
