Michael Johnson commends Sara Hall's inspiring fifth-place finish and resilience at the US Olympic Marathon Trials.

American sprint legend Michael Johnson has heaped praise on marathon runner Sara Hall for her exceptional performance and attitude at the recent US Olympic Marathon Trials.

Despite finishing fifth and missing out on a spot in the Olympic team, Hall's determination and resilience have caught the attention of many, including Johnson, who is renowned for his own Olympic triumphs.

Veteran marathoner Sara Hall demonstrated a masterful performance at the Trials, securing a time of 2:26:06.

This remarkable feat not only earned her an American masters marathon record, surpassing Des Linden's previous record set in 2023, but also showcased her enduring prowess in long-distance running.

Despite battling against muscle cramps and the sweltering heat, Hall's spirit remained unbroken, a testament to her incredible fortitude.

Starting strong and keeping pace with the lead pack for the majority of the race, Hall's prospects looked promising.

However, as the eventual winner, Fiona O’Keeffe, surged ahead between miles 18 and 19, Hall faced severe cramping that threatened to derail her efforts.

Showing her characteristic grit, she fought through the pain, managing to overtake Caroline Rotich in the final stretch and secure a commendable fifth-place finish.

Reflecting on her performance, Hall expressed a mix of disappointment and pride.

"5th at the Olympic Trials marathon. This one hurts more than any of the other 7, and yet I feel proud and have no regrets," she said.

Responding to Hall's courageous display, Michael Johnson took to his X - formerly Twitter - page.

"Absolute world class attitude and perspective right here," he wrote, encapsulating the admiration and respect Hall's performance has commanded.

At 40, Hall's journey to the Trials was not without its setbacks. After withdrawing from the Houston Half Marathon earlier in the year due to a minor injury, there were doubts about her readiness for the Trials.

However, under the guidance of her husband and coach, two-time Olympian Ryan Hall, she has continued to defy expectations and improve in longer distances.

Hall's career has been nothing short of remarkable, with 12 U.S championships to her name and a gold medal in the steeplechase at the 2011 Pan American Games.

Her recent achievements in marathons have been particularly impressive, including setting a then-American record in the half marathon and leading a strong U.S. contingent at the World Championships marathon.
