Former World Under-20 3000m SC bronze medallist Simon Koech has shared the key lessons he learnt from the 2023 track and field season.
Not only did Koech get a chance to make it to the national team for the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, but he also competed in a series of Diamond League Meetings.

The 20-year-old won the Diamond League Meeting in Monaco and went ahead to stun his opponents at the Prefontaine Classic, the Diamond League final meeting in the USA.
Competing in his first race in the senior category at the World Championships, Koech finished seventh in the final of the race.

“Last season, I was able to learn a lot of things. I learnt about perseverance and I also got the chance to compete in those big races and get accustomed to them…that is a very important thing,” Koech said during a post-race interview after winning the 3000m SC race at the second Athletics Kenya meet.
The youngster added that he will be keen to apply the lessons learnt from last season as he focuses on donning the Team Kenya jersey for the Olympic Games in Paris, France. He also disclosed that his main goal next year will be qualifying for the global showpiece.
“When that time for the Olympic Games comes, I will know how to prepare myself and do well,” Koech said.
He added that his body is responding well so far having competed in cross-country races before competing on the track.
