Teenage sensation Reynold Cheruiyot upstaged veteran runners to win the 1,500m at the Olympics trials to seal his ticket to the Paris Games.

Reynold Cheruiyot continued to display why he is the new kid on the block in the 1,500m when he won the Athletics Kenya Olympics trials to secure his ticket to Paris on Friday.

In a competitive race and with only the top two guaranteed a direct ticket to the Olympics, Reynold Cheruiyot showed great strength to hold off the challenge of Daniel Mungiti and former world champion Timothy Cheruiyot to emerge victorious.

The 19-year-old crossed the line in a time of 3:35.63 with Munguti managing 3:35.80 while Timothy Cheruiyot clocked 3:35.90.

Reynold Cheruiyot can look forward to a fruitful Olympics where Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the Olympic champion, and Briton Josh Kerr, the world champion await.

For Munguti, there is still the little matter of not having achieved the Olympic qualifying mark despite finishing second, and he might have to seek the standard in another event, before the June 30 deadline or go through via his good rankings.

Olympic silver medallist Timothy Cheruiyot, meanwhile, will hope to be the third runner selected by Athletics Kenya’s panel to complete Kenya’s team.

The 2019 world champion has been showing good form lately and had already achieved the required standard before the trials.
