Moiben sub county police commander Stephen Okal confirmed the arrests, saying that a knife suspected to have been used to stab the athlete was recovered from the suspects.

Police have arrested two suspects linked to the murder of Ugandan steeplechaser Benjamin Kiplagat , whose body was found in a car in the town.

Okal said the motive of the killing appeared to be a criminal incident and that a mobile phone and money were stolen from the deceased, although further investigations are ongoing.

The area police boss also added that the two were wanted criminals who had been tormenting residents of the ara for long.

Kiplagat has been competing for Uganda where he holds the 3,000m steeplechase.

The body of the athlete was found  inside a car belonging to his brother with a deep cut on the neck at  Texas area near Kimumu Secondary school along the Eldoret-Iten Road.

An abandoned motorcycle was also found next to the vehicle.

Police said he had been attending a meeting with fellow athletes near Nyaru area in Elgeyo Marakwet before he left at about midnight on Sunday.

He had also attended to a group of masons who were working on a site in the area.

Athletics Kenya (AK) officials led by Barnabas Korir mourned the death of the athlete and urged the police to speed up investigations and bring to book his killers.

He has represented Uganda on various events including the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India where he finished fourth missing the podium narrowly, the 2011 World Championships Daegu, South Korea where he finished in 10th position and the 2012 Olympic Games in London, United Kingdom where he reached semifinals.

He also bagged a bronze medal at the Africa Championships in Porto Novo in Benin in 2012 before finishing in the heats at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, China, the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
