Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei who tragically suffered severe burns in a domestic violence incident has passed away.
Cheptegei, a marathon runner who represented Uganda at the Paris Olympic Games, succumbed to her injuries at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret.

The Ugandan long-distance runner is fighting for her life at a hospital in Eldoret following an alleged attack by her boyfriend that has left her with burns covering 75 per cent of her body.
Cheptegei was admitted to the intensive care unit after sustaining burns on 80 percent of her body in an alleged attack by her boyfriend, who reportedly doused her with petrol and set her ablaze.
The incident which also left the boyfriend with burn injuries has shocked the community and raised serious concerns about domestic violence.
“Unfortunately, we lost her after all her organs failed last night,” MTRH acting Director Dr. Owen Menach confirmed as per The Star.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday when Marangach allegedly sneaked into Cheptegei’s home with a five-litre jerrican of petrol.
Cheptegei, who had gone to church with their children, returned home only to be confronted by the violent attack.
According to witnesses, Marangach poured petrol over her and set her on fire, triggering screams that alerted neighbors. Neighbors responded to the commotion, managing to rescue both Cheptegei and Marangach, who were later rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Despite being admitted to the ICU at MTRH, where medical personnel fought tirelessly to save her, Cheptegei's condition worsened.
