However, he tired massively in the second half of the race, eventually finishing 37th in 2:08:59, in a race that was won by Ethiopian Sisay Lemma, who clocked 2:01:48.

Despite a disappointing debut at the marathon, Joshua Cheptegei has expressed calm, asserting he had learned his lessons, pledging to return more robust in future races.

At the Valencia marathon on Sunday, the 5000m and 10000m world record holder was among those dropped, having reached the half in the lead group in 60:35.

However, he tired massively in the second half of the race, eventually finishing 37th in 2:08:59, in a race that was won by Ethiopian Sisay Lemma, who clocked 2:01:48.

“Marathon is a journey, a new chapter that I opened today," Cheptegei told NN Running Team.

"I am proud that I finished, despite that the result didn’t match up with what we had trained for," he added.

" I have had disappointment before, and it always made me come back stronger; it is the most powerful lesson in life. More marathon chapters will be written in the years to come," Cheptegei vowed.

"For now, I will first go home and enjoy some time off with my family before the preparations for the Paris Olympics will start."

While Cheptegei finished 37th, three-time gold medalist Kenenisa Bekele made fourth, having clocked 2:04:19.

Meanwhile, Kenyan Alexander Mutiso and Ethiopian Dawit Wolde finished second and third, clocking 2:03:11 and 2:03:48, respectively.
