In a heart-stopping photo finish, Russell edged out France's Cyrena Samba-Mayela by a mere hundredth of a second, with a time of 12.33 seconds to Samba-Mayela's 12.34 seconds.

Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico secured the bronze medal with a time of 12.36 seconds.
100m women's hurdles World Record recorder Tobi Amusan of Nigeria was absent after her semifinal time of 12.55s was not enough to book a place in the final.
