Letsile Tebogo was named Best Male Athlete of the Paris 2024 Olympics by ANOC for his gold in the 200m and silver in the 4x400m relay, highlighting Africa’s rising athletic prowess.

Letsile Tebogo was named the best male athlete of Paris 2024 Olympic Games by the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) in the event held on Wednesday, October 30 in Cascais, Portugal.

The Motswana youngster was recognised following his impressive performance in the French capital where he stunned triple world champion Noah Lyles to take the top prize home in the men’s 200m final.

Letsile Tebogo, the world 100m silver medallist, also anchored the Botswana 4x400m relay team to a silver medal behind Team USA that was anchored by Olympic 400m hurdles champion Rai Benjamin.

Following the recognition, Letsile Tebogo fired warning shots to the rest of the world, noting that Africa is just getting started and by the LA 2028 Olympic Games, things will have gotten heated and the continent will have joined the chat of bigwigs.

The world 200m bronze medallist added that winning the gold medal changed a lot and brought unity to the whole of Africa.

“Firstly, we believed in what we were doing and we had set the target for the 200m gold because it is not too tactical and we locked in everything and went for it. Africa became united and we became one country and watch out for Africa because it’s coming next,” Letsile Tebogo said.

Letsile Tebogo added that the award from ANOC is a motivation for him to keep going and it’s a recognition of his hard work and sacrifice. "It means a lot to me to be recognised by ANOC, it motivates me to keep on pushing," Tebogo said.

Other athletes recognised at the ANOC event include Olympic 100m champion Julien Alfred, six-time Olympic table tennis champion Ma Long of China and New Zealand’s canoeist Lisa Carrington, an eight-time Olympic gold medallist.
