Julien Alfred’s coach, Edrick Floreal, has revealed the secret recipe he formulated to help her master the 100m, which enabled her to claim the Olympic title over favourite Sha'Carri Richardson.

Julien Alfred’s coach Edrick Floreal has explained the work they put in during training to ensure she claimed the 100m Olympic title over Sha’Carri Richardson at the Paris Olympic Games.

Edrick Floreal explained that he was aware Julien Alfred hated the 200m but they had to incorporate more of that in her training to help in execution of the 100m. In an interview with Ato Boldon, the veteran tactician pointed out that they also did the 4x400m relays races to help, revealing that Julien Alfred would rather do the relay than the 200m.

The coach noted that at the Prefontaine Classic, when Julien Alfred lost to Sha’Carri Richardson, she was still mastering the art of running the 100m but when she went for the Racers Grand Prix, things started looking up for her.

Julien Alfred continued her dominant ways to the Diamond League Meeting in Monaco before finishing second behind Gabby Thomas at the meeting in London in the women’s 200m.

“She hates the 200m, so I think there’s a lot of components of the 100m that people run away from because they don’t see the value of the 200m or even the 4x400m leg and allowing the athletes to execute at that really maximum velocity phase where they can sort of relax,” Coach Edrick Floreal said.

“Well you have to do that in the 200m, you can’t just bully it, you have to at some point in time trust it and execute and relax. If you don’t have that in the 100m, it’s not going to work, so when you look at Prefontaine, there was somewhat a battle, she was falling forward, losing, and when you look at her composure, even in Jamaica, that was the first time I saw her do what we had been talking about,” he added.

Coach Edrick Floreal added that Julien Alfred has always been winning the 100m in the last 40m, explaining that the first 60m were only to get her into shape.

He slammed analysts who claim that the 100m is just like a 60m dash, explaining that you can’t just keep accelerating from the start since you have to pick a struggle once you step on the blocks and the gun goes off.

“The first 60m was just average but the last 40m begins to open up and separate and I think that began in Monaco and it was the same in the last few races she won. She won them in the last 40m, there was no race she won in the first 60m,” he said.

“We were able to sort of duplicate that in Paris, so to me, I think that we have to get away from the idea that the 100m is a 60m dash or a flying 30…it’s not, you can’t just sprint and think you are going to be effective.”
