Julius Yego still has hopes to make his fourth appearance at the Olympic Games despite missing out on the Olympic qualification standard at the African Championships.
The 2015 world javelin champion Julius Yego has his fingers crossed and believes he has a chance to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Yego was in action at the African Championships in Douala, Cameroon, where he won but unfortunately missed the qualification mark.
He threw 80.22m to become Africa Javelin Champion for a record fifth time but missed the qualifying mark of 85:50. He now hopes to qualify via the world ranking.

Julius Yego makes history at African Championships but falls short of Olympics standard
Former world javelin champion Julius Yego achieved a historic feat at the African Championships following another gold medal but Olympics qualification is still not achieved.
The former Olympic Games silver medallist went to Finland to try and rise through the ranks, a move that worked well for him and he moved up to 29th place from 32nd. He hopes the results at the African Championships will also help him rise more in the ranking.
“I went to Finland to get the points because that is the most important thing having not gotten the qualifying distance within this period so I’m crossing my fingers for the rankings because that’s the only option I have now for the Olympics,” the five-time African champion said.
“I planned with my manager and Athletics Kenya to go to Finland…I informed them about this and they were really happy because I needed points. At that time, I was ranked at number 32 but with the results from Finland, I am number 29.

“That is within the rankings because they need 32 athletes and I’m crossing my fingers now for the African Championships which may now elevate me to the top 20. I’m really happy and I’m holding my prayers to see if on the 2nd of next month (July), I’ll be among the 32 athletes.”
Reacting to his performance, Yego expressed his excitement and marveled at being able to win five titles. Being up against South Africa, Egypt, and Nigeria, Yego noted that it was not a smooth ride and he had to dig deep for a win.
“It’s really amazing and for me, I think having won five titles in Africa is not easy because we have opponents from South Africa, Egypt, and now from Nigeria,” he said.
