African Games organisers have announced the money that has been set aside for the top three finishers at the continental event.
The 13th edition of the African Games is currently underway in Accra, Ghana with athletes from across the continent out to showcase their talent and hopefully walk away with the prize money set aside for the top finishers.
Kenyans have not been left behind as the track and field sessions started on Monday, March 18, medals have already been won by Amos Serem and Simon Koech who bagged the silver and bronze medals in the men’s 3000m Steeplechase.

Kenya won three more medals at the ongoing African Games to take the country’s tally to nine but they are still searching for gold with hopes that athletics will save the day on Tuesday.
Reigning world 800m champion Mary Moraa was off to a good start in the 400m Heats and will be out to impress in the semi-final and final of the race.

As of Sunday, March 17, Kenya was placed 26th with Botswana in the medal table having only bagged five bronze medals, no silver or gold. However, with Serem’s exploits, Kenya has now added a silver medal to her tally and a bronze, thanks to Koech.

According to the ministry, winning a gold medal will attract a prize of $3000 (about Ksh400,000), and $2000 (Ksh266,000) for winning a silver medal, while bronze medallists will attract a cash prize of $1000 (Ksh133,000).

Mary Moraa has fired warning shots at her opponents ahead of the 400m semifinal scheduled for later today after displaying class to win the heats.
This means that Serem and Koech will walk away with Ksh266,000 and Ksh133,000 respectively, thanks to their effort to finish in the podium bracket.
The figures were revealed at a press briefing in Accra on Sunday evening, the eve of the start of the athletics leg of the games. Athletes will also receive about Ksh10,200 per diem for each of the 14 days they will be in camp during the games.
