The steeplechase record holder has got much to ponder and work on before the World Championships and the remaining legs of the Diamond League.
Top-ranked women steeplechase athlete in the world Beatrice Chepkoech received a shocker in London on Sunday afternoon when enterprising youngster Jackline Chepkoech beat her hands down to claim her maiden Diamond League victory and a world leading to boot.
The 20-year-old’s winning time of 8:57.35 set the meeting record and a stern warning to Beatrice ahead of the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary next month. The senior Chepkoech remains top of the Diamond League rankings though.

Beatrice had displayed symptoms of fatigue in her earlier races as Jackline duly confirmed to the senior athlete that she needs to get back to the drawing board lest the world title slips through her fingers.
“I really didn't expect to win today! Beating the meeting record feels incredible and such an achievement to finish it in under 9 minutes,” exclaimed the youngster who perhaps had never imagined trouncing the world record holder
She will now believe in her abilities and will most definitely give Beatrice a run for her money henceforth. Beatrice appeared stunned, and rightly so. The lightning-quick start and great stamina displayed by the younger Chepkoech dumbfounded her.
“It was a quick race. I enjoy racing in London, but I'm disappointed with my time. I'll be at the Worlds in Budapest, I want to focus on my speed before then,” Beatrice said after the race

Beatrice understands that she has to better her speed to remain at the summit of steeplechase racing. She only has one Diamond League victory this season from Lausanne, Switzerland but could return stronger as the premier track and field circuit takes a 31-day break.
At the Kenyan trials, Beatrice sought to race with Faith Kipyegon in the 1500m but was left disappointed as the mile record holder opted to run the 5000m instead.
