Beatrice Chepkoech has disclosed why she chose to open her season with the 5000m race at the third Athletics Kenya weekend meet.

Reigning 3000m Steeplechase world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech opened her 2024 with a commanding win in the 5000m at the third Athletics Kenya weekend meet held at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Chepkoech floored the 5000m experts to win the race in 15:22.05 ahead of specialist Rebecca Njeri Mwangi who finished second in 15:52.91. Vivian Kosgei completed the podium, clocking 16:46.08 to cross the finish line.

The World 3000m SC silver medallist led from gun to tape and she seemed to be enjoying the race. Many would think she is slowly switching from her specialty to the 5000m but Chepkoech explained that she was looking for speed and endurance.

“I chose to run the 5000m today because I’m looking for speed endurance since the target is to go to the Olympic Games.

“The season is still young and my coach and I decided I should work on my speed endurance. We have not started extensive training yet.

“Yes, I am satisfied with the time I have run today since it was my first race of the season,” Chepkoech said in a post-race interview.

Last season, Chepkoech was coming back from a hamstring injury and she had a mixed season. She finished second at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary behind Kenyan-born Bahraini Winfred Yavi.

Chepkoech also finished second at the Diamond League Meeting final that was held at the Hayward Field in Eugene, the USA. However, she is getting better and looking forward to satisfying her fans this season.

Her next assignment will be the ORLEN Copernicus Cup, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting, in Torun, Poland, on February 6. She will face a stern test in the 1500m, competing against two Ethiopian youngsters, Diribe Welteji, and Freweyni Hailu.
