On top of finishing ninth, Gathimba narrowly missed out on the prize money bracket.
On a chilly Saturday mid-morning in Budapest, Hungary, Samuel Gathimba took on the tough course in the men’s 20km race walk at the World Championships with the hope of raising the country’s flag high but unfortunately failed to achieve a podium finish.
On top of that, Gathimba narrowly missed out on the prize money bracket after finishing ninth in 1:18:34. World Athletics had announced that they will only award the top eight finishers in the event.

In the hotly contested race, Spain’s Maria Perez carried the day as she cut the tape in a time of 1:26:51.
His performance had also dropped from last year’s global showpiece in Oregon where he finished fourth. Despite the three setbacks, Gathimba disclosed that he is content with some feats like a season’s best time.
"Basically, the rainy weather did not bother me, but there were parts where I could not really handle it well. It was better than I could imagine it. The result is the best surprise for me this year because it is my season's best,” he said during a post-race interview.
Spain’s Alvaro Martin took top honours in the race as he clocked 1:17.32 to cut the tape. Sweden’s Perseus Karlstrom and Brazil’s Caio Bonfim finished second and third in respective times of 1:17:39 and 1:17:47.
Meanwhile, Emily Ngii also failed to live up to expectations in the women’s 20km race walk when she faded to finish a distant 18th in the hotly contested race.
