ATHLETICS Winny Chebet hoping to change narrative at Kip Keino Classic after Diamond League disappointment

Abigael Wafula 11:00 - 12.05.2023

The women’s 1500m race will start at 5:40 p.m. EAT.

Africa 1500m champion Winny Chebet is in search of redemption when she sets foot on the track for the Kip Keino Classic to be staged at the Moi International Sports Center in Kasarani.

Chebet, 32, has not had quite a good start of her track season. She began her campaign at the Nyayo National Stadium during the second Athletics Kenya meet where she finished sixth in the final of the 800m race.

She then went for the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Qatar and failed to impress as she fizzled out to finish 14th over the 1500m as two-time world and Olympic 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon flew the country’s flag high.

Chebet will be lining up against a strong field with the hope of salvaging herself from maintaining the poor run.

She will enjoy the company of compatriots Brenda Chebet-reigning world under-20 1500m champion-, Josephine Kiplangat, Lydia Lagat and Edinah Jebitok. The trio of Peninnah Wachira, Sylvia Chesebe and Nelly Chepchirchir will also be in the mix.

The Kenyan women will be battling it out with some of the best athletes from Ethiopia including youngster Ksanem Alem who will be keen to upset the seniors. Another Ethiopian, Bube Dadi will also be in the mix hoping for a podium finish. The duo will be opening their season at the event.

Another one to watch out for is Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi. The 23-year-old started her track season at the Diamond League Meeting in Doha where she ran a brilliant race that saw her clinch the 3000m SC title in a world leading time of 9:04.38.

Yavi will be keen to maintain the hot streak when she lines up against the strong field.

European Champion Angelika Cichocka of Poland will also be looking to shine on Kenyan soil for the first time. The world indoor silver medallist is also a force to reckon with as she will be looking for redemption after her 13th place finish at the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Qatar.

Ugandan duo of Janat Chemusto and Sarah Chelangat will also be hoping to upset the hosts.

The women’s 1500m race will start at 5:40 p.m. EAT.
