Around 1700 athletes from 70 countries are expected to meet in the edition of the event in 2025.
World Athletics has announced the third edition of the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships (WMTRC) will take place in Canfranc-Pirineos, Spain, between September 25 to 28 in 2025.
As well as the four-day elite race program, the event will include a summer-long cultural and leisure festival to promote the Pyrenees Mountain Range.

It was reported that around 1700 athletes from 70 countries are expected to meet in September 2025 in Canfranc-Pirineos - which takes over from Innsbruck in Austria – host of the coming edition of the championships, taking place this year between June 6-10.
The race program will feature uphill mountain running, classic up-and-down mountain running, short trail, long trail, and U20 classic up-and-down mountain events.
Canfranc-Pirineos offers a superb sporting environment, which will allow each athlete to perform to the best of their ability and create a complete competitive experience for athletes, teams, federations, and international associations.
That is proven by the list of world champions who have run and won at the Canfranc-Canfranc including Joyce Muthoni Njeru of Kenya to USA’s Grayson Murphy and Britain’s Charlotte Morgan, as well as Spain’s Oihana Kortazar, Manuel Merillas, Luis Alberto Hernando and Daniel Osanz.

ATHLETICS Florence Kiplagat to return into competitive athletics next month after four years
Her last competition was during the 2019 Outdoor Meeting in Israel where she competed over the 10,000m and finished third.
“On behalf of the LOC, we are thrilled to be hosting the 2025 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in our country and look forward to welcoming the best mountain and trail runners from all corners of the globe,” said RFEA President Raul Chapado.
Meanwhile, the Canfranc-Canfranc is also set to host the 2024 World Masters Championships, before the region welcomes athletes for the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in 2025.

The 26-year-old will use the southern France city to train for the global event slated for August in Budapest.
Elsewhere, a total of 1122 athletes from 67-member federations are entered to compete in the next edition of the 2023 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships, taking place in Innsbruck-Stubai in Austria between June 6 to 10.
That number includes 506 athletes who entered into 574 women’s events and 616 athletes who entered into 710 men’s events.
