British champion Jeremiah Azu made history by backing up his European 60m gold medal with a stunning world indoor title in Nanjing.

In a highly contested men's 60m final, Great Britain's star sprinter Jeremiah Azu stormed to the gold medal in a blistering Personal Best (PB) of 6.49s to bring the first day of action at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing to a thrilling close.

The British champion ran a perfectly executed race from the start to hold off Australia's Lachlan Kennedy, who settled for the silver medal in 6.50s, while South African sprint legend Akani Simbine clocked 6.54s for the bronze medal.

Sadly, Puerto Rico's Eloy Benitez who produced flashes of brilliance through the qualifying rounds with 6.48s in the heats and 6.51s in the semis, did not finish the race having pulled up mid-race. Likewise, USA's Ronnie Baker, pulled up close to the finish line as he settled for fifth in 6.59s.

Notwithstanding, the medallists will savour the moment of winning their first medals in their maiden outing at a world indoor championship.

For Azu, adding the world title to his European gold two weeks ago, Kennedy proving his world-leading 6.43s was no fluke by claiming Australia's first world 60m medal in history, and Simbine finally winning his first global individual medal after a series of fourth- and fifth-place finishes in major international finals.

“Just raw emotion,” said Azu, who is unbeaten this season and becomes the first British champion in the event since Richard Kilty 10 years ago. “I was a bit emotional before the final with my coach. The last three years have been very difficult for me.

“It’s about the final and doing it when it matters. I’m glad I’ve got the ability to do that – the ability to win.”

With their exceptional outing in Nanjing, the trio will be gunning to build on the form with more brilliant performances outdoors, with the ultimate goal for podium placements at the Tokyo World Championships in September.
