After being released from a Russian prison, Brittney Griner has reportedly agreed a deal to return to the Phoenix Mercury on a one-year deal
Brittney Griner has signed a one-year contract with the WNBA team, Phoenix Mercury worth $165,100 to return to the court after spending 10 months in prison in Russia.
Brittney Griner returns to the WNBA
On Dec. 8, 2022, Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medallist was released from Russian prison after she was exchanged for convicted arms dealer Viktor Bout.
A Russian airport official claimed to have found hash oil in Griner's luggage in February, and she was sentenced to nine years in prison.
After pleading guilty to drug possession charges, she was convicted of both drug possession and smuggling.
Griner's return to the Mercury had been anticipated after she confirmed her desire to play in Phoenix again upon her return from Russia.
I intend to play basketball for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury this season, and in doing so, I look forward to being able to say ‘thank you’ to those of you who advocated, wrote, and posted for me in person soon.
Although she missed out on the entire 2022 season, she averaged 20.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in 2021, helping the Mercury to the WNBA Finals, losing in four games to the Chicago Sky.
She was the No.1 draft pick in 2013 and has spent her entire career with the Phoenix Mercury.
