Nigerian sisters Chiney and Nneka Ogwumike target upgrade with LA Sparks.

A three-time WNBA champion club finished 2022 with a 13-23 overall record and missed the playoffs for the second straight year.

Nigerian-American WNBA All-Stars Chiney and Nneka Ogwumike at the team's media day at El Camino College in Torrance discussed the new style of basketball being played by the Sparks franchise.

Chiney Ogwumike, a forward for the Sparks signed this summer and is beginning her sixth WNBA season.

Speaking about success, she said,  “I measure success by impact.

“I think the impact that we have as women who hoop is something that we can’t take for granted so when we step on the floor and wear this jersey that we’re wearing, that’s impactful.

“We want to win, this is the city of winning, this is the city of champions and I think you should never count out an underdog.”

The older sister, Nneka Ogwumike, is going to give her time to concentrate on playing basketball and spending time with her teammates.

The 2016 WNBA MVP entering her 12th season in the said, “No matter where we land, I think we’re going to be fine.

“If you fail, you try again. You find another or you figure something out, you get creative.

"There’s not just one way to do things and you can’t just do it by yourself and so that’s my measure of success, who are you impacting, who are you bringing along, who are you elevating and the rest will come.”

The Sparks begin their new season against Phoenix Mercury on Friday, May 19, 2023.
