DR Congo knocks out Nigeria's D'Tigers at 2023 AFROCAN

Nigeria's senior men's national team, known as the D'Tigers suffered a 74-72 loss to their counterparts from the Democratic Republic of Congo on Thursday, July 13, 2023.

The result means that the D'Tigers were out of the AfroCan, a men's basketball continental competition in Africa open to all players who play for basketball clubs based on the continent.

D'Tigers recorded a much needed blowout win against their counterparts from Gabon to set up a meeting against DR Congo.

The Congolese started well, as they took the first quarter 31-19 to establish a 12 point lead against D'Tigers.

In the second quarter, Nigeria's D'Tigers put up a fight with an 18-14 win margin, reducing the deficit to eight going to the halftime break.

D'Tigers kept up the momentum in the third quarter, which they took 17-14, reducing the deficit to five going to the closing stages.

In the fourth quarter, the D'Tigers traded buckets and ended up with an 18-15 win margin but lost the game by two points.

The defeat to DR Congo means that the D'Tigers exit the 2023 AFROCAN Cup in the quarter final stages.

They end the AFROCAN with two wins against Mali and Gabon and two defeats against DR Congo and Angola.

D'Tigers and FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Lagos 

The AFROCAN is a massive step for Head Coach Ogoh Odaudu ahead of the upcoming FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament. 

The Group Phase is set for Lagos, Nigeria, as the D'Tigers are set to play in front of their home fans for the first time in a while. 

The D'Tigers are in group A and will face Mali, Uganda, and Senegal and hope to qualify for the 2024 Olympics after missing out on a spot at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
