In addition to winning the 2021 NBA title with his squad, he has won two league overall MVP awards and was voted the 2021 Finals MVP.

However, until last year, the 29-year-old, who was raised in Greece, had never visited his parents' native Nigeria.

Instant messaging platform WhatsApp released a documentary about Antetokounmpo coming to Nigeria in 2023.

A statement about his return by WhatsApp said, "Global basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo returns to his roots in Nigeria.

"After a life spent in Greece and a career spent in the US, he heads to his homeland to discover where his story started.

Hilda Baci, a former Guinness record holder, hosted Giannis Antetokounmpo and his family.

Baci posted the meeting with Antetokounmpo on Instagram, calling the event a delicious Nigerian feast.

Giannis launches Igbo speaking school

Giannis Antetokounmpo has opened a new learning center in Nigeria with the goal of improving Igbo literacy among young people.

Giannis' first trip to Nigeria in July 2023 was chronicled in a homecoming film made with WhatsApp, which included footage from the reveal in Lagos.

In the documentary, the center—which was founded in collaboration with WhatsApp—aims to give Igbo children a supportive setting in which to acquire their mother tongue.

Giannis, whose parents are Igbo and Yoruba, claimed he was unable to master both languages because they couldn't agree on who should teach the children their dialect.
