The event kicked off on Friday, April 14 is set to conclude on Sunday, April 16 at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The Summit Cup Men’s Basketball Championship event organiser Job Waka believes the three-day tournament will give an opportunity to the youngsters to showcase their talent and hopefully get a chance to join the national team or league clubs.

Waka, who doubles up as the former Alliance Girls’ High School basketball coach, noted that the tournament has attracted national team coaches who will be scouting for talent.

He noted that he was impressed by the turnout of young players and he hopes by the end of the tournament, they will have improved their skills and even landed better opportunities.

“We have had a good tournament so far and I am impressed by the young players who have come to play. They just needed this platform to express themselves. We want the national team coaches and coaches league teams to identify and give these young men an opportunity,” Waka said, as quoted by KTN Sport.

The event which kicked off on Friday, April 14 is set to conclude on Sunday, April 16 at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Waka insisted that the national team and league clubs need a new stream of players to ensure continuity of the sport.

“The main aim of this cup is to ensure that the national team has a blend of younger and older players,” he said.

He added that they aim to motivate the youngsters by awarding them a small token. He lamented that most events held in the country leave the players with trophies alone which is not enough motivation for the players.

The winner will pocket KSh100,000, while the first and second runners-up will receive KSh50,000 and KSh30,000 respectively.

He also called upon the partners to come and support the sport going forward to ensure such events are held frequently. “We would love to ask for more corporate support in order to develop the sport in the country,” he said.

Waka also complained about the poor state of the Nyayo National Stadium and called upon the Ministry of Sports to look into the stadiums facilities and upgrade it.
