The Pelicans, who were also shorthanded, will play a club that is having trouble finding an offensive rhythm, especially while their rotation is readjusting due to injuries.
However, after defeating the Spurs in San Antonio on Friday night, the Lakers overcame the lulls that come with playing on the second night of a back-to-back, defeating the Pelicans 102-99 to stand at 9-4 on the season.
Dalton Knecht, a rookie forward, scored a career-high 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including 5 of 10 3-pointers, while Anthony Davis scored 31 points and pulled down 14 rebounds.
LeBron James, however, gave the Lakers the late-game shooting they required with his 21 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
With less than two minutes remaining, James, 39, made a catch-and-shoot to put the Lakers ahead 98-97 after missing his first five 3-pointers and having troubleshooting for the majority of the game.
James dominated the game late one night after taking a more off-ball role in the closing minutes.
With 37 seconds remaining, he made another 3-pointer off a pick-and-roll to put the Lakers ahead 101-97.
James split two free throws and Knecht made two more to give the Lakers the victory as the Pelicans were forced to foul late.
After taking a few days off, the Lakers will play the Utah Jazz on Tuesday to begin a three-game homestand in the NBA Cup Group Play.
