In a franchise-changing trade, the Minnesota Timberwolves are moving Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks in exchange for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and a first-round pick.

Despite having a few bad seasons before leading the team to the Western Conference finals last spring, Towns, a four-time All-Star who is about to enter his tenth season, has never expressed any dissatisfaction with the organization that selected him first overall in 2015.

The 7-footer will be going back to his childhood home in New Jersey, which is an advantage.

However, three days before training camp started he did not seem to anticipate this move coming.

In addition to an All-Star power forward in Randle, the Wolves also acquire a first-round pick to make up for some of the draft picks they shipped to Utah in exchange for Gobert, as well as a sharpshooter in DiVincenzo, who just finished his strongest shooting season.

Tim Connelly, president of basketball operations for Minnesota, demonstrated his courage by going all out in the Gobert trade and now doubles down with the addition of Randle.

As the Wolves are ready to take on the challenge of trying to advance deeper in the playoffs while the best Western Conference teams don't seem to be easing up around them, this might be their most significant move.

Young star Anthony Edwards and center Rudy Gobert will now take on more responsibility for the Timberwolves.
