Record champions Senegal and 2007 winners Mali will be Uganda’s opponents in the first phase of the competition.

The FIBA Women’s Afrobasket draw conducted Friday night placed Uganda in Group C alongside two former champions.

Record champions Senegal and 2007 winners Mali will be Uganda’s opponents in the first phase of the competition.

Senegal, who are 11-time champions, pause a serious challenge to the Gzaelles, and so do Mali.

But with the Gazelles expected to rely on the services of some of their best players based in the US, the team intends to make some noise and cause a few shocks.

“We have a challenging group, but we intend to compete,” Gazelles team captain Flavia Oketcho told Pulse Sports about the draw results and expectations.

“To be considered among the best, one must face the best,” she added.

Uganda’s qualification came via the FIBA Women’s Zone V Afrobasket Qualifiers, in which the team finished second behind Egypt.

With Rwanda hosting the finals, it was not clear whether Uganda would get a wild card to make it three teams from the same zone (Zone V).

But the team’s performance in the 86-85 win over Egypt is said to have been enough to convince the powers that be that Uganda would add spice to the finals.

“I believe in the Gazelles and what we can bring to the table,” Oketcho noted.

The team is expected to start preparations for the finals on June 26, with all the players plying their trade overseas.

A two-week camp in Kigali is also on the cards as a way of helping the team get adequate training before the finals.

The tournament is slated for July 28 to August 6 at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda.
