Heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk explains why Chelsea will not regret signing Mykhailo Mudryk.
Ukrainian professional boxer Oleksandr Usyk has offered hope to Premier League giants Chelsea regarding their recruitment from his country.
Chelsea bought Ukrainian professional footballer Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk for a reported 100 million euros during the last winter transfer window.
Mudryk has struggled to be consistent in his production since he switched teams and has attracted criticism from the fans as well as the media.
Usyk defends Mudryk on Chelsea form
In an interview with PariMatch, reigning IBF, IBO, WBA, and WBO heavyweight champion Usyk defended his compatriot Mudryk.
The fee to recruit Mudryk, Chelsea made a 20 million pound donation to the Ukrainian state to help their fight against the Russian invasion.
During the initial stages of the invasion, Usyk returned to Ukraine to defend his country.
Mudryk and Usyk have now been given permission to further their sporting careers outside the country.
Usyk in the interview talked about the fee Chelsea paid to get Mudryk from Ukraine.
He said, “No, it doesn’t. Everything has risen. Prices, and money, are a little higher than they were.
"I think he’s worth a little more than €100 million because I’ve been watching this guy. I saw him for the first time playing for the U-18 or U-19 team."
The heavyweight boxing champion then went on to back his compatriot to follow in the footsteps of Andriy Shevchenko bringing another Ballon d'Or to Ukraine.
He added, "The hairstyle that catches your eye, the tattoos, I mean, he was playing, and I was watching him, and I liked him.
"It seems to me that this guy can bring the fourth Ballon d’Or to Ukraine."
Usyk is in negotiations with English professional boxer and reigning WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury for an undisputed fight.
Negotiations between Usyk and Fury are progressing with Wembley Stadium in London booked for Saturday, April 29, 2023.
