Uganda She Bombers captain Emily Nakalema has defeated Nigeria's Peter Kate Isim of Nigeria in the welterweight category quarterfinals in the ongoing Africa Elite Men's and Women's Boxing Championships in Cameroon's capital, Yaounde.

Nakalema outpointed Isim to advance to the semi-finals and, thus, the medal bracket. She joins Ronald Okello (middleweight), who successfully fought his way to the medal brackets.

Other medallists, Grace Nankinga (light flyweight), Solomon Geko (Heavyweight), and Erinah Namutebi (light welterweight), were drawn in the medal brackets and will begin their campaign in the semi-finals.

Aged 24, Nakalema is an experienced boxer, having featured in the Dakar Africa Olympic qualifiers for the Tokyo Olympics.

There, she reached the quarterfinals. She has also won gold at the national open boxing championships and defended her national title in 2019.

The semi-finalists are assured of a bronze medal if they fail to negotiate past the semi-finals. Gold medal winners will receive $15,000 (about Shs54m), silver-medal $10,000 (about Shs36m) and bronze $5000 (about 18m), while quarterfinalists will get $1,250 (about Shs4.5m) as part of the Shs3.7bn prize money package.

Nakalema, Okello, Geko, Namutebi, and Nankinga are assured of bronze medals and Shs18m and could do better depending on their progress.

Other quarterfinalists include Ukasha Matovu and Wasswa Ssali, both one bout away from the medal brackets.

Ssali won by split 3:2 against Kenya's Irungu Maina in the lightweight category preliminary as he stormed into the quarterfinals. Ssali is one bout away from the medal brackets as he faces Naba Ousmane.
