Hearn says Anthony Joshua is not in charge of tactics ahead of the fight against Jermaine Franklin.

There is a major change in the hierarchy as English professional boxer of Nigerian descent Anthony Oluwafemi Joshua returns to the ring.

The 34-year-old takes on American professional boxer Jermaine Franklin on his return to the ring after a six months absence.

Joshua returns after back-to-back losses against Ukranian professional boxer Oleksandr Usyk.

Anthony Joshua and former coaches

After the first loss to Usyk, Joshua decided to make a change to this training staff.

He got rid of long-term train and British former professional boxer Robert McCracken.

It ended amicably with McCracken as Jshua employed veteran American trainer Robert Garcia for the second fight.

Garcia could not help Joshua get a victory against Usyk in the second fight and was dismissed.

In a recent interview, Garcia criticised Joshua's work ethic for the rematch against Usyk.

Joshua responded with a message that he is not perfect but tries to do as instructed.

He said, “When it comes to your head coach, I think it is important to keep things in-house, especially when you are talking about your fighters.

“There are things I didn’t like about some of my old coaches that I could talk about, but I don’t.

“No one is perfect but, when you come together in arms to go to war, there should be a level of respect.

Anthony Joshua to take instructions from Derrick James

Ahead of the fight against Franklin, Joshua decided to employ American trainer Derrick James to take charge.

British sports promoter and chairman of Matchroom Sports Edward Hearn talked about his clients' preparation ahead of the fight against Franklin.

Hearn said the tactics of the fight are strictly down to James as Joshua wants him to take charge.

He said, "I've heard a lot of nice things from AJ this week, ask Derrick whatever Derrick says.

"He has given the responsibility to Derrick James, when they are in the corner tonight, once voice, look me in the eyes and tell me what to do.

"When AJ believes in the game plan and knows how to carry it out, he is unbeatable."

Joshua will now aim to have a winning start with his new coach against Franklin.

Joshua takes on Franklin at the 02 Arena in London, United Kingdom on Saturday, April 1, 2023.
