Middleweight boxer Ronald Okello has secured the Africa Elite Men's and Women's Championships medal after storming into the semi-finals at the ongoing tournament in Yaounde, Cameroon.

In the middleweight quarterfinals on August 1, Okello opened his campaign on a winning note. He got the better of Obama Mangue of Equatorial Guinea as he won a split decision 3:2.

With stern determination, Okello made the most of his international debut in national colours as he technically outwitted Mangue in a closely-contested affair.

The victory weaves magic to Okello's rise in Uganda's boxing scene. A resilient boxer, Okello featured in the 2020 national trials for the Africa Olympic Qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal but missed out on the slot.

However, he bounced back from the disappointment and shone in the Uganda Boxing Federation Champions League, thus earning him a ticket to Yaounde.

Before the Dakar qualifiers, Okello was the national champion in the amateur ranks in 2018 and 2019.

Okello's victory over Mangue adds to Uganda's medal tally in Yaounde as Okello joins Grace Nankinga (light flyweight), Solomon Geko (Heavyweight), and Erinah Namutebi (light welterweight), who will open their campaigns in the semi-finals.
