Canelo Alvarez celebrates his career in Mexico with a victory against John Ryder.
Canelo Alvarez made his homecoming in Guadalajara and his first appearance in Mexico since 2011 against John Ryder in the early hours of Sunday, May 7, 2023.
He knocked the British fighter down in the fifth round and had him in serious trouble in the ninth, but he was unable to get the stoppage victory that would have made the fight a total success.
Canelo successfully defended his undisputed super-middleweight title, but it was a wide decision on the cards, with one judge scoring it 120-107 in his favor and two others giving it a score of 118-109.
Canelo wants Bivol next
Canelo went up to light-heavyweight and suffered a shocking points loss to the Russian Dmitry Bivola in Las Vegas for the WBA title nearly exactly a year ago.
Alvarez is now largely expected to face Bivol next. The conditions of that rematch, though, continue to be a problem because Canelo insists it must happen at 175 pounds once more despite the disadvantage it gives him.
Bivol insists he will drop to 168 pounds in order to compete for Canelo's whole collection of super-middleweight belts. He claims he has previously demonstrated that he is superior at that weight.
Speaking after defeating Ryder, Canelo expressed his desire to get revenge on Bivol once more, but he added that he would only do so under the same circumstances as those of the previous year.
He said, “Everybody knows we want Bivol, the rematch with Bivol.
“If the fight with Bivol don’t happen, then we’ll see. I’m able to fight everybody.”
It remains to be seen whether the bout can be scheduled for later this year, but it appears to be Bivol's best choice after uncontested negotiations with Artur Beterbiev failed.
