The legendary boxer has been battling mental health issues for the past 14 years

Retired pugilist Conjestina 'Conje' Achieng, one of Kenya’s finest female boxers with several international wins under her belt, has been offered a job by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

Through a post on social media, Sonko promised to employ the former Kenyan champion as security and training head in his various establishments.

Conje has been battling financial and mental health issues since she left boxing in 2011 and for the last eight months, she has been rehabilitating at a halfway house in Mombasa.

“She will be the overall assistant head of security and head of all female bouncers at Club Volume Mombasa at night & during peak hours/holidays.

She will also serve as the head trainer in all the gyms in our establishments (Salama Bling Beach Resort, Kimeremeta Safari Lodge etc…). As a long term measure, we are intending to open for her a boxing training centre where she will be coaching boxing,” Sonko tweeted.

The 45 year old retired boxer was rescued by Sonko and taken to Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Hospital in Miritini.

In 2009, Conje was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder or paranoid schizophrenia, a chronic mental illness in which a person loses touch with reality.

She has been in and out of hospitals since then, with Sonko being one of the few boxing fans who rescue her.

During her heydays, Conje was once a darling to many boxing fans nationwide, having twice won World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion, World Boxing Federation, Global Boxing Union and World Boxing International Federation (WBIF) titles.
